Rev. J. Leon Newton passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. He was 89 years old.
Rev. Newton was born on November 16, 1932 in Newtonville, S.C., to the late P.L. Newton and Susie Lee Newton. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, S.C. He served as a Methodist minister in the South Carolina Conference for 43 years. His ministry included stops in Darlington, Pamplico, Georgetown, Chesterfield, Gaffney, Mullins and Conway. He also served as president of the South Carolina Mental Health Association. Upon retirement in 1999, he and his wife, Betty Newton, resided at the family farm for 21 years before moving into the Methodist Manor in Florence two years ago.
Rev. Newton leaves behind to cherish his loving memory, a son, David Hunter Newton; a daughter, Susan Newton Graebe and husband Chris; four grandchildren, Robin Hunter Newton and wife Paige, Bradley Carter Newton and wife Kari, Caroline Graebe, and William Graebe; and three great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Grace Newton, Blakeland Christopher Newton, and Fiona Newton.
A service of celebration will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, S.C., to honor the memory of Rev. J. Leon Newton
