Congratulations to Marlboro Chamber of Commerce’s July 2021 Business of the Month- The Marlboro Publishing Company! A cornerstone of the community, they have been in business since 1931; making them one of the longest-running businesses in Marlboro County. Marlboro Publishing Company is the parent organization of both the Herald-Advocate community newspaper and Pee Dee Life regional magazine.

The Marlboro County Herald was started by Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Kinney in 1931. It was originally located on Liberty Street in the building now occupied by the Midgley Agency. In 1952, the Kinneys purchased the Pee Dee Advocate, the other Bennettsville newspaper, which traced its roots back to 1874, merging the names of the papers to the Marlboro Herald-Advocate. The office moved to the corner of Liberty and McColl Street, which had been the home of the Pee Dee Advocate. Stationery (that has since expanded into a complete gift shop) and job printing businesses were added at that time. In 1953, Marlboro Publishing Company purchased the McColl Messenger newspaper. The McColl Messenger operated as a separate publication for many years before being added to the Herald-Advocate as a separate section. The senior Kinneys sold the business to their son, Bill Kinney Jr. in 1972. In 1984, Kinney purchased and renovated “Shiness,” a 1902 cotton merchant’s home at the corner of Fayetteville Avenue and Broad Street that remains The Marlboro Publishing Company’s home today. In 2014, Dan and Elisabeth McNiel bought her father’s interest in the company. Dan McNiel is the current publisher and editor of the newspaper. In 2019, Marlboro Publishing Company introduced Pee Dee Life magazine, which highlights the culture of the six-county Pee Dee area of the state.
